Minchin has now revealed the reason why he decided to not cancel the performance.

‘I really care that when I play gigs that people have an experience that feels honest. It was the day after my mum died, so I thought I’d be honest,’ he told news.com.au.

‘Not because I wanted to manipulate them or get pity, but because everyone goes through those experiences.

‘That’s our job as artists to go, “I’ve experienced this and this is how I unpack it and maybe you’ll get something out of me talking about it and playing songs”,’ he added. 

During the show last month, a tear-eyed Minchin moved the audience by inviting them to sing along to an encore of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah, in honour of his mother Ros.

He had shocked the crowd by making the tragic personal announcement on stage.

‘My mum died yesterday,’ Tim told the stunned audience. 

He had been sharing several stories about his mother and played a variety of songs he had written about her during the show.

During one of his stories, Tim revealed his mum Ros was diagnosed with terminal blood cancer back in 2020.

He received a standing ovation at the end of the show before making the devastating announcement.

Many audience members praised Tim on sharing such a candid confession.

‘Fifth time seeing Tim Minchin tonight. Absolutely incredible show without question his best! Very emotional ending to the night,’ one person wrote on X.

Tim and his wife Sarah, who he married in 2001 and shares a daughter and son with, returned to Australia from Los Angeles in December 2017.
