The Big Bang Theory star Johnny Galecki reunited with his Christmas Vacation co-stars in Beverly Hills on Thursday night for a special 30th anniversary screening of the classic National Lampoon film. The event took place at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater amid news that Galecki is producing a spin-off for HBO Max titled The Griswolds.
Galecki – who played Rusty Griswold in the 1989 film – posed for pics with Chevy Chase (Clark Griswold), Beverly D’Angelo (Ellen Griswold), Juliette Lewis (Audrey Griswold), and Dianne Ladd (Nora Griswold).

Chase and D’Angelo were staples of the National Lampoon Vacation franchise, appearing in the original in 1983, followed by European Vacation in 1985, Christmas Vacation in 1989, and Vegas Vacation in 1997. However, the roles of Rusty and Audrey were played by different actors in each film.
The Vacation franchise was based on John Hughes’ short story Vacation ‘58 that was originally published by National Lampoon magazine. According to The Daily Mail, the four films in the series grossed a total of $182 million at the box office, and have since become cult favorites.
In 2015, Warner Bros. attempted to reboot the franchise with a re-imagining of the original that starred Ed Helms and Christina Applegate. Even though it received mixed reviews from critics and fans, it still managed to gross more than $100 million at the box office.

Now, Galecki will be the executive producer of The Griswolds, a half-hour, single-camera sitcom that follows the titular family living everyday life in the suburbs of Chicago. They have not yet announced the casting for the new series, and it isn’t clear if any of the actors from the original film series will be part of the project. But, it has been revealed that Tim Hobert – from shows like Community, Scrubs, and The Middle – will be writing the scripts.

In addition to The Griswolds, HBO Max is reportedly involved in a lot of reboots and spin-offs, including an animated Gremlins series, a Gossip Girl reboot, and a prequel to Practical Magic. The streaming service – which launches in May 2020 – will also be the new home for sitcom favorites Friends, The Office, Parks and Recreation, The Big Bang Theory, and The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air.
